Walking in the Yorkshire Dales

A wonderful location for your walking holiday in Yorkshire

Stay at Newton Grange Holiday Cottages to begin your walking holiday in Yorkshire. Discover a range of short and longer walks from the doorstep, following a section of the Pennine Way or Leeds Liverpool Canal before joining a variety of inter-connected footpaths taking you in to Malhamdale and beyond.

Venture further afield to discover rewarding local summits with a view, uplifting woodland walks in nature, amazing geological wonders, breathtaking moorland walks and challenging hikes to some of the highest points in Yorkshire. The range of walking available is vast, whether you prefer to amble on level paths or stride out across hills and moorland, you will be rewarded by fresh air, stunning views and a sense of achievement.

There is an annual walking festival in early May that takes in walks from the Settle Carlisle Railway line. Guided walks operate from stations along the train line throughout the year and can be reached from Gargrave station, two miles away.

Walking is one of our passions and we love to hear where our guests have enjoyed in the Dales. We are always happy to suggest recommendations for local walks and we provide walking routes and maps in our cottages to get you started. Below are seven of our recommendations – one for every day of the week.

Recommendations for a week of walking

On the doorstep
East Marton and the double-arched bridge

Walk or cycle from the cottages towards East Marton and you will discover the amazing sight of the double-arched bridge in East Marton, also known as Bridge 161 of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. What an incredible feat of engineering the construction of the canal and its bridges was.

On the doorstep
Gargrave and the Pennine Way

As you walk over the hill from Newton Grange Cottages to the village of Gargrave, following the route of the Pennine Way, you will be rewarded by long-distance views over the village and church, with the backdrop of Sharp Haw and the hills of the Yorkshire Dales National Park beyond.

5 miles away
Sharp Haw, Skipton

Just outside the town of Skipton is a wonderful little summit called Sharp Haw, which can be climbed from Stirton or Flasby. As you ascend to the Trig Point, a wonderful vantage point awaits. There is a shiny bench at the top so that you can sit and enjoy the view.

8 miles away
Embsay Crag

Another popular local summit, Embsay Crag, is happily situated on moorland above Embsay reservoir. A circular walk can be enjoyed from the reservoir, ascending the Crag to pause and take in the view. Continue along the moor before returning downhill to Eastby and back to the village of Embsay.

9 miles away
Malhamdale Spectacular

For dramatic limestone scenery, geological wonders and amazing waterfalls, the Malhamdale Spectacular walk really packs a punch. Elsewhere in Malhamdale you can find walking routes away from the crowds and discover a place of your own to sit for a while and take in Yorkshire's majestic beauty.

16 miles away
The Norber Erratics from Austwick

This walk is a personal favourite of mine, being a geographer at heart. The walk is set amidst stunning Yorkshire Dales landscapes, pepper-potted with amazing gritstone boulders that were thought to have been deposited by melting ice sheets at the end of the last ice age.

17 miles away
Ingleborough and Three Peaks country

Open views and impressive summits, we love to take a hike up any one of Yorkshire's "Three Peaks" - Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent or Whernside. The scenery is open and far-reaching. The dramatic location of Ribblehead Viaduct flanks Whernside and is a sight to behold.
